Annual Open Enrollment Periods

You’ve heard a lot of buzz about healthcare reform and now you want to know how it will affect you and your family! We’ve got the answers on everything you need to know about what’s new in the health insurance market.

What is the annual open enrollment period?

It's the opportunity for you to shop new plan options, rates, broader benefits and much more! You can shop and enroll in a plan that best fits the needs of you and your family. This open enrollment period will occur for a few months annually in the fall. Once the annual open enrollment period is closed, you can only apply for coverage if you have a special enrollment period (i.e. baby, marriage etc.)

Once I have chosen a plan, when will my insurance coverage become effective?

Annual Open Enrollment
November 1, 2017 - December 15, 2017

If you apply and application is received between November 15 - December 15, 2017 your policy will be effective January 1, 2018

What will happen to my current plan if I choose to keep it?

If you choose to make no changes, then your current plan will automatically renew. You will receive information from Sanford Health Plan yearly with any plan updates or discontinuations prior to the open enrollment period.

Can I make plan benefit changes at any time throughout the year?

No. Plan benefit changes can only be made during the open enrollment period each year, unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP).

  • Special Enrollment Periods include life events in which an individual loses coverage (aside from failure to previously pay premiums), has a major move to an area with new insurance options, is married, or is having/adopting a baby. For further details, you can go to healthcare.gov to see if you qualify for a SEP, or call Sanford Health Plan Customer Service at (888) 535-4831.
